In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.
In the wild, there is no one to save them but themselves. Amazon's synopsis : Tommy Orange's "groundbreaking, extraordinary" The New York Times "There There" is the "brilliant, propulsive" People Magazine story of twelve unforgettable characters, Urban Indians living in Oakland, California, who converge and collide on one fateful day. It's "the year's most galvanizing debut novel" Entertainment Weekly. Dene Oxendene is pulling his life back together after his uncle's death and has come to work at the powwow to honor his uncle's memory.
Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil, who has taught himself traditional Indian dance through YouTube videos and will perform in public for the very first time. There will be glorious communion, and a spectacle of sacred tradition and pageantry. And there will be sacrifice, and heroism, and loss. Amazon's synopsis : Midwestern movie house owner Virgil Wander is "cruising along at medium altitude" when his car flies off the road into icy Lake Superior. Virgil survives but his language and memory are altered and he emerges into a world no longer familiar to him.
Awakening in this new life, Virgil begins to piece together his personal history and the lore of his broken town, with the help of a cast of affable and curious locals — from Rune, a twinkling, pipe-smoking, kite-flying stranger investigating the mystery of his disappeared son; to Nadine, the reserved, enchanting wife of the vanished man, to Tom, a journalist and Virgil's oldest friend; and various members of the Pea family who must confront tragedies of their own.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Amazon's synopsis : On a dark midwinter's night in an ancient inn on the river Thames, an extraordinary event takes place. The regulars are telling stories to while away the dark hours, when the door bursts open on a grievously wounded stranger. In his arms is the lifeless body of a small child. Hours later, the girl stirs, takes a breath and returns to life. Is it a miracle? Is it magic? Or can science provide an explanation? These questions have many answers, some of them quite dark indeed. Amazon's synopsis : Anna Fox lives alone — a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside.
She spends her day drinking wine maybe too much , watching old movies, recalling happier times Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare. What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control?
In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one — and nothing — is what it seems. He and his partners learn to track other humans under blistering sun and through frigid nights. They haul in the dead and deliver to detention those they find alive. Plagued by a growing awareness of his complicity in a dehumanizing enterprise, he abandons the Patrol for civilian life. Amazon's synopsis : Although Scott Carey doesn't look any different, he's been steadily losing weight.
There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn't want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King's most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade — but escalating — battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott's lawn.
One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face - including his own — he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott's affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.
Amazon's synopsis : Just after midnight on July 30, , days after delivering the components of the atomic bomb from California to the Pacific Islands in the most highly classified naval mission of the war, USS Indianapolis is sailing alone in the center of the Philippine Sea when she is struck by two Japanese torpedoes.
The ship is instantly transformed into a fiery cauldron and sinks within minutes. Some men go down with the ship. Nearly make it into the water alive. For the next five nights and four days, almost three hundred miles from the nearest land, the men battle injuries, sharks, dehydration, insanity, and eventually each other. Only will survive. A sweeping saga of survival, sacrifice, justice, and love, "Indianapolis" stands as both groundbreaking naval history and spellbinding narrative—and brings the ship and her heroic crew back to full, vivid, unforgettable life.
It is the definitive account of one of the most remarkable episodes in American history. Amazon's synopsis : George Washington Black, or "Wash," an eleven-year-old field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is terrified to be chosen by his master's brother as his manservant. To his surprise, the eccentric Christopher Wilde turns out to be a naturalist, explorer, inventor, and abolitionist. Soon Wash is initiated into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky, where even a boy born in chains may embrace a life of dignity and meaning — and where two people, separated by an impossible divide, can begin to see each other as human.
But when a man is killed and a bounty is placed on Wash's head, Christopher and Wash must abandon everything. What follows is their flight along the eastern coast of America, and, finally, to a remote outpost in the Arctic. What brings Christopher and Wash together will tear them apart, propelling Wash even further across the globe in search of his true self. Amazon's synopsis : Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara's older brothers became violent.
We saw tree frogs, giant stick insects, innumerable other insects, a fast moving and highly venomous coral snake and a thick set heavy tarantula as big as my size eight hand. One highlight was a helicopter insect which decided to perch on my hat so I couldn't see it , but the rest of our group saw what they described as a 10cm long stick with wings that whirred rapidly around above it in perfect imitation of a tiny helicopter. You never knew what you were going to come across next in the dark.
We arrived back at the resort after three hours of very rough walking for an excellent dinner and lively discussion amongst our group seven including us of Americans and Canadians. Day 3 The wake up call came at the unearthly hour of 5am. We were soon being paddled back across the lagoon and along the tortuous creek, for the 30 minute trip back to the Napo River.
See a Problem?
We transferred to a motorised canoe and went about a kilometre up the river to a point where there had been a landslip. Hundreds of parrots of three different species were crowding onto the exposed clay, which was being eaten by the birds for the mineral content. Another couple of kilometres along the river we landed at a Kichwa village. This tribe is native to this area of Ecuador, and most of the workers and boatmen at the resort come from this village.
As a result the village is one of women as most of the men were away at work for much of the time. The women have set up a tour of their village demonstrating the crops manioc, cassava, cocoa, plantains etc.
30. "Circe" by Madeline Miller
We had a walking tour through their patch of jungle and were shown which plants were used for food and medicine. We finished with a tasting plate of local foods - the roasted cocoa seeds from which chocolate is made were delicious. Even though the jungle is teaming with animals, it is quite hard to see them.
A large animal may be only a metre from you in the jungle, but impossible to see. Puma and jaguar exist here but are very rarely seen, although their depredations on the villagers chicken coops are regularly noted. On the way back to the resort, as we passed along the creek again, we saw pygmy marmosets swinging and leaping from tree to tree - at 10cm.
That evening we had another treck through jungle for an hour but this was interrupted as we found out why Amazonia is called a tropical RAIN forest. We suddenly heard the heavy drumming of rain on the canopy far above us. Some of our group requested the ponchos that the guide carried but I opted to continue as I was in the humid heat.
After 20 minutes the rain stopped, and I found that no more than a dozen drops of rain had reached my shirt, while those in ponchos were soaked in sweat. The rain channelled down from the canopy along leaves, branches and trunks to reach the ground in a torrent beside the track making it very muddy, but virtually none fell directly on to us.
The lodge provided us with gumboots for all our walks, so the mud was no problem either.
The only interesting finding at this time was a huge millipede about 15cm long that the guide let happily roam up and down her bare arm. We reached the lagoon and the canoes as the sun started to set, and in the treetops saw six howler monkeys playing and drying themselves in the sun. Toucans and night jars flew overhead vocalising freely.
There is an amazing amount of traffic on the river, even at this time of year when the water level is at its lowest, most associated with the petroleum industry. We were told the traffic quadruples when the river level is higher. We passed heavy barges, dugout canoes, cross river ferries, speed boats, motorised native canoes and high speed jet boats that could skim over the shallows. We arrived back at Coca for the flight to Quito after a fascinating and unforgettable four days. We had an amazing trip here part of our 40th Wedding anniversary celebrations.
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, the rooms were clean and comfortable, housekeeping was brilliant. The activities were diverse and interesting. This is THE place to stay in Equador.
